The Future of Travel: Must-Know Trends for the Next Decade

Both are world-class. Here’s how to choose.

This is the most common question I get from Americans planning their first Nepal trek. Both routes are spectacular. Both are achievable for reasonably fit travelers with no prior trekking experience. The right choice depends on your timeline, budget, and what kind of experience you’re after.

The Basic Differences

Everest Base Camp is a 14-day trek in the Khumbu region, starting with a flight to Lukla and finishing at the foot of the world’s highest mountain. Maximum elevation is 5,550 meters at Kala Patthar. The route is iconic, the Sherpa culture is fascinating, and standing in view of Everest is genuinely moving.

Annapurna Circuit is a longer trek, typically 14 to 18 days, that circles the entire Annapurna massif and crosses the Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters. The route passes through dramatically varied landscapes, from subtropical forest to high alpine desert, and through a wider range of ethnic communities than the Everest region.

Difficulty

Both are rated moderate to difficult. EBC is more straightforward in terms of route, a clear trail up the valley and back. The Annapurna Circuit involves more daily variation in terrain and a more demanding high pass crossing at Thorong La.

Neither requires technical climbing or prior mountaineering experience. Both require good cardiovascular fitness and proper acclimatization.

Cost

EBC tends to run slightly higher due to the Lukla flight and the higher cost of supplies in the Khumbu region. Annapurna Circuit is generally more affordable, especially since no domestic flight to a remote airstrip is required for most itineraries.

Both are well within reach for most American travelers budgeting $3,500 to $5,000 all in including flights from the US.

Crowds

EBC is one of the busiest trekking routes in the world, especially in October and April. The trail can feel like a highway at peak season. The Annapurna Circuit is busy too but generally less congested, and the longer route means trekkers spread out more.

If solitude matters to you, Annapurna Circuit or a less traveled route like Langtang is worth considering.

Scenery

This is subjective and both regions are extraordinary. EBC puts you in close proximity to the highest peaks on earth. The Khumbu valley is dramatic and the final approach to base camp is unlike anything else.

The Annapurna Circuit offers more variety. You go from rice paddies and rhododendron forest to high altitude desert in the span of a few days. The view of the Annapurna range from Poon Hill at sunrise is one of the most photographed mountain views in the world for good reason.

Which One Should You Do First?

If standing at the base of Everest is a specific goal, do EBC. It is the definitive Himalayan trek and it delivers on every expectation.

If you want more variety, a longer adventure, and a slightly lower price point, Annapurna Circuit is an outstanding choice and arguably the more complete trekking experience.

If you’re not sure, reach out and let’s talk through your timeline, fitness level, and what matters most to you. I’ve done both multiple times and I’m happy to help you decide.
